Hand-carved by a master-level craftsman in the 1500s, this wonderful wooden frame features a pierced grapevine frieze encircling a thin cavetto interior molding. The highly detailed carvings are comprised of multiple grape bunches interspersed amongst large leaves and sinuous vines. It is reminiscent of Renaissance Venetian frames, although there are also Spanish examples with similar motifs from this time. With an interior sight of 14 1/8 H x 11 5/8 W, the frame can be paired with a small painting or used to surround a bathroom or vanity mirror. The frame could also be used horizontally, but additional rigging would need to be used, as the eyelet on the back is set up for a vertical presentation.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition, with minor losses and age separations commensurate to 500-year-old wood. Traces of old restorations and old woodworm. Slight losses to the finish. Rigged in the back for hanging as a vertical painting or mirror.
