Small Single Pillar Freestanding Carved Limestone Fountain from Provence, France

$2,300.00

Description

Consisting of five pieces of Estaillade limestone, this small single-pillar fountain was hand-carved by a stone mason in Provence, France. The freestanding fountain is quite versatile, as it could be positioned as a wall fountain or used as a central water feature in a small garden or courtyard.

Topped by a pyramidion finial that rests above an entablature with a deep cavetto cornice, the pillar sits atop a thick rectangular plinth with beveled molding behind the square basin. Chamfered front edges give the rectilinear pillar some subtle curves, flanking the iron spout and rosette backplate that emanates from the top of the stone. The spout is positioned so that water cascades down into a 4 ½ inch tall basin (14 5/8 W x 14 5/8 D) that is topped by two iron bars. Before water sources became more widespread, iron bars were often used on village fountains, allowing citizens to place ewers and jugs beneath the spout to claim water for drinking, bathing, and laundry. Today, these bars can be used to elevate a potted plant or small jardiniere. The cream-colored limestone with white accents has areas that have developed a darkened patina, allowing this small single pillar fountain to be used inside or outdoors.

CONDITION: Very good condition, with intentional distress marks, presented as nicks and losses. Limestone is a natural material that can change color with exposure to the elements. Please contact us for photos of the current patina. Oxidation to the iron pieces, most noticeably to the spout and backplate.
