Italian Quadrilobe Fountain Basin with Lion Mascarons in Carved Limestone

Description

This versatile quadrilobed fountain basin is adorned with several styles of molding and lion mascarons. Hand-carved by an Italian stone mason, the basin wall can be described as a “barbed quatrefoil”, with angular points in between each lobe. The top edge has a quarter round molding on all sides, adding flair to the already impressive stonework.  These types of fountain basins are prevalent throughout Rome, where they were originally carved from marble about 400 years ago.

All sides are thickly sculpted, with a mix of quarter round, cavetto, and step moldings. The sides of the four lobed sections feature playful lion faces, with eyes gazing upwards and mouths open. Margin stones lay beneath the basin wall, mirroring the shape of the stones above, and have been finished with cavetto moldings.

Our “Roman” quadrilobed fountain basin can be used in a variety of ways. The basin can be placed in the center of a courtyard and paired with a pump with a vertical jet. It could also be fashioned into a koi pond or large planter to enhance the landscape of a yard.  Of course it can also form the framework of any center fountain feature which can fit within its walls.

CONDITION: Very good condition. Stone is a natural material that can change color with exposure to the elements. The light gray stone has developed a darker gray patina. Please see photos for details.
