Description

Although Rococo originated in France in the 1730s, the style was pervasive, spreading throughout Central Europe. One area noted for exceptional Rococo creations was northern Italy, in particular, Venice, where this giltwood mirror was hand-carved in the 1800s.

The Rococo is known for its lively elements, represented in this mirror by the abundance of curves and motifs inspired by nature, such as shells, foliage, and flowers. A large, pierced crest tops the mirror, consisting of an attenuated leaf with C-scrolls and flowers. The flowers trail down the shaped border of the glass, terminating at the canted corners, just above textured C-scrolls and floral margents that adorn the sides. Borders of crenellation and ogee molding envelop the glass, which has subtly tapered sides that flank a curvaceous bottom edge. Beneath the sinuous bottom is a scalloped shell surrounded by additional C-scrolls and flowers. An exuberant version of a Venetian Rococo-style giltwood mirror, this beautiful mirror can be hung in any room of the house, from the hallway to a bathroom.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition with minor losses and age separations. Light loss of silver to the (original) mirror, which is a desirable trait. Traces of old restoration work. Rigged for hanging.
