Pair of Tall 18th Century Silvered Brass Candlesticks from France

$3,700.00

Description

At over three feet tall, this pair of silvered brass candlesticks would make impressive decorative accessories or light sources. Dating to the 1700s, these French candlesticks have a vibrant silver hue, with some areas of darkened patina.

Both candlesticks are topped by a single pricket with a large bobeche adorned with subtle cavetto molding above gadroon enveloped in leaf cups. The roughly cylindrical columns have several protruding areas of various depths with motifs that include more gadroon in leaf cups, rosettes over rectangles, garland, egg and dart, and foliate cartouches. Supported by tripartite volute legs over leafy block feet, each side of the triangular base is festooned with a large bulging cartouche, pinnate leaves, fluting, and a floral apron.

These tall, silvered brass candlesticks are eye-catching due to their massive presence, silvery palette, and well-worked décor. They could be used functionally as candlesticks, although most collectors will find more benefit in using them as decorative accessories on a console or sofa table.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Commensurate wear, presenting as undulations and light buildup. Very light age separations. Visible restoration work to the silvering in some areas.
