Hand-carved in Italy, circa 1800, this pair of giltwood angels is depicted in a double genuflection, or kneeling, stance. Both angels are completely gilded with addorsed wings and a long, flowing chiton gathered by a brooch at each shoulder. The faces and haircuts of the angels are distinct, with one having a shoulder-length ponytail, while the other has a shorter pageboy cut. Both angels are kneeling on a wedge-like painted black base. The carvings are well detailed, from the nuances of the individual faces to the gathered fabric on the legs. Our pair of giltwood Italian angels would make perfect decorative accessories for a console, mantel, or open-shelved cabinet.
CONDITION: Good antique condition, with minor losses and age separations, commensurate to age and handling. Traces of old fills and light buildup. Because they were hand-carved and represent distinct entities, the dimensions are not equal. Please see photos and measurements for details.
