Description

A monumental pair of decorative elements, these stunning Italian marble obelisks measure 69 ¾ tall. Dating to roughly the 1950s, the pillar features an amazing 75 layers of hand-carved square marble specimens that form the traditional tapering obelisk shape topped by a pyramidion. Both pillars have identical construction, with a beautiful multi-color tower dominated by neutral-colored stones (beige, white, and cream), laced with dynamic accents ranging from gold, black, green, red, and brown marbles. Some marbles have mottled inclusions and veining, while others feature a more uniform composition. The undulating pedestals, which consist of nine thicker rings of marble, have much darker palettes, with hues of black, brown, maroon, and gray.

Smaller-scale obelisks (usually under three feet tall) were sometimes used as decorative accessories on consoles, desks, or mantels during the 19th century. Our towering pair, which are just under six feet tall, would make fantastic additions to a grand foyer, flanking an interior entryway, or as elements to draw attention to a piece of art or a hanging tapestry.

CONDITION: Very good condition with minor scratches and fleabites.
