Cast in the early 1900s using reconstituted stone, this pair of stone lions are reminiscent of the famous Medici lion sculptures that currently grace the steps of the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. Our lions, which are mirror images of each other, are depicted sitting on their haunches with one paw raised in the air (one has its left paw up, while the other is raising its right) with the head looking away from the raised forelimb. The manes are incredibly detailed adding a sense of regality to the seated lions, which have developed a wonderful black, beige, and brown patina to the light gray colored stone. Visible losses and undulating edges to the 2 ½” thick plinth add additional character to the noble creatures, which can be used as garden ornaments or as decorative architecturals that flank an entry or walkway.
CONDITION: Strong antique condition with minor nicks and acceptable losses. Traces of old restoration work. There are slight variations to the dimensions, as different models were used for each lion. Please see photos for details.
