Hand-carved in six pieces of limestone in Southern Italy, this fireplace mantel is in the style of Louis XVI. The deep fluting of the legs, with partial infills (known as cabling or chandelle), is reminiscent of columns from ancient Greece and Rome. Additional fluting can be seen on the lintel, with four groupings separated by three recessed rectangles. The lintel has also been carved with disproportionate moldings on the top and bottom, although the thinner top molding is topped by a one and a quarter inch thick capstone that slightly overhands the lintel. Cream accents permeate the gray colored limestone mantel, which has a rectilinear form, making it a very appealing option for wherever a fireplace is needed.
CONDITION: Good condition. Intentional distress, presenting as fleabites and minor nicks. Small areas of discoloration, most noticeably to the center of the lintel and the left leg.
