Pair of French Bronze and Wrought Iron Fleur De Lys Chenets, Circa 1920s

$1,200.00

Description

Although the fleur de lys is closely associated with French culture, and more specifically, the French Monarchy, the true origin of the symbol is unknown. There are references in historical documents of ancient cultures as far away as India and Egypt. This pair of French chenets features bronze fleur de lys mounted on wrought iron bases.

The term fleur de lys is French for “lily flower”, explaining why the image is floral-like. Each of the fleur de lys has a pointed main petal flanked by two scrolled ones. The knop is comprised of two horizontal bars, while the stalk is shaped with two scrolled terminals. Produced around the 1920’s in France, our bronze and wrought iron fleur de lys chenets can be used in any style fireplace.

CONDITION: Wear commensurate to age and use with minor rubs and buildup. Light oxidation to the wrought iron bases. The bronze fleur de lys have developed a blackened patina from exposure to smoke.
