Constructed from salvaged antique wood that has been reinforced with more recent boards, this large-scale coat of arms shield has an outward curve, reminiscent of the bend of a real escutcheon. Hand-carved and hand-painted in Florence, Italy, the overall form of the panel is a shaped console comprised of volutes, curled leaves, and a segmented shell, in the grisaille style. Contained within the flowing surround are three heraldic displays on shaped shields. The center coat of arms has two fields, both with vibrant colors that stand out from the gray background. On the dexter (left) side of the shield is a golden rampant lion on a navy background, dotted with four eight-point stars, also in gold. The sinister field has a cream background with a red bend bordered by gold. Multiple fleur-de-lys, known as seme-de-lys, have been painted in gold, matching the color of the three crowns on the bend. Beneath the coat of arms are two smaller shields, presented at angles. The heraldry on the left is oval, with a golden sunburst on a white bend, with two navy stripes and one red comprising the background. Repeating black and red chevrons with a single gold fleur-de-lys adorn the elliptical shield with concave sides.
Measuring over six and a half feet tall (78.5 inches), our large Italian coat of arms panel would make an impressive wall-mounted decorative object in a game room, living room, or entry hall.
CONDITION: Good condition. Constructed from antique, repurposed wood, which has minor losses and age separations, as well as old woodworm and light paint stains to the verso. Intentional distress to the painted elements (presenting as paint losses and rubs), which were added more recently.
