Exceptional 18th Century Oak Boiserie Panel from Chateau Saint-Maclou, Normandy France

SKU: 218-8 Category:

$9,800.00

Description

This fabulous hand carved boiserie or wooden panel was recently purchased from the Chateau St. Maclou in Normandy, France. Rooms of boiserie had design motifs that were kept the same throughout the entire area that was paneled. For instance, on this panel, there are mainly acanthus leaf motifs used in various areas. A medieval lion head crowns the top, and a large spray of ivy flanks either side of him. There are swags or drops of floral and fruit motifs. So, all of these motifs would have been on various panels throughout the room. It’s possible that this section may have been an overmantel or part of the rooms bookcase. The quality of the carvings, the thick oval molding, and beautiful golden oak make this panel a rare find.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with age separations, and some losses.
