Large Octagonal Limestone Center Fountain from Provence, France

SOLD

Description

This large octagonal center fountain from Provence has been hand-carved from 15 pieces of Estaillade limestone. The center column has a ball finial on top of a square plinth. Beneath a second, larger plinth is a thick cornice with cavetto molding. A third plinth lies below two rectangular column stones, with the upper one having two raised roundel carvings that house a pair of scrolled iron spouts. Another large rectangular stone forms the base of the column. There are cutouts in the base for two iron rods that extend to similar cutouts in two of the basin wall stones.

The seven ¼” thick basin wall is in the shape of an octagon, which is the classic style of fountains found in villages throughout France. On the old French fountains, the two bars would have been used to hold buckets while filling water. Originally, they were connected to natural water sources.

CONDITION: Very good condition with intentional minor losses and distress marks. Limestone is a natural material that can change color with exposure to the elements.  Please contact us for photos of the current patina.
