Although sunburst motifs were seen on small convex mirrors as early as the 15th century, it was not until the reign of Louis XIV, aka The Sun King, that sunburst mirrors became larger and more flamboyant. Our large Italian giltwood sunburst mirror with wooden pendant surround was hand-carved using antique materials in Northern Italy.
Although the mirror is quite large (62 ¾ inches in diameter), the reflective surface is relatively small at 11 inches in diameter. It is encircled by a parcel painted black surround with cavetto molding. A series of wooden pendalogues (salvaged from a chandelier) with traces of a white finish are arranged in a circle along the edge of the surround. Radiating from beneath the oblong pendants is a magnificently carved giltwood sunburst with 20 rays. The large sunburst mirror with wooden pendant surround would make a fantastic addition to a grand foyer, entry hall, or living room. It can also be featured in a bathroom or powder room
CONDITION: Good condition with light buildup to the mirror. Minor nicks and losses to painted areas. Light loss of silvering to the mirror. Rigged for hanging. Please see photos for details.
