Antique Polished French Copper Chaudron or Wine Cooler with Wrought Iron Handle, C.1850

$860.00

Description

Antique copper cookware, such as this polished chaudron with wrought iron handle are highly sought-after decorative pieces due to their unique color and (typically) bright patina. Hand-crafted in France, circa 1850, our chaudron has a shaped wrought iron handle that rests on a thick rolled rim when not in the upright position. The handle is affixed to the cauldron by a pair of horseshoe shaped mounts, each with two rivets. When the chaudron was used for cooking, the handle would be raised and fitted onto a cremaillere (chimney hook) above the fire.

Interestingly, the interior has been so delicately hammered that there are no visible motifs on the exterior. The faint chasing consists of six rings of roundels, with Vitruvian waves filling the space between the upper two tiers. Our polished French copper chaudron could be hung in the kitchen as a decorative accessory (or even used functionally as a cooking pot). It would also make a very unique wine cooler for a bar area or game room.

CONDITION: Good antique condition, with light oxidation to the handle and verdigris and rubs to the interior, all commensurate to age and use. Minor cavitations and rubs to the exterior, but the finish still retains a high sheen.
