Description

Dating to the latter half of the 19th century, circa 1880, this French wrought and pinned iron chandelier is in the Gothic style, as evidenced by the highly detailed ring that comprises the bottom bowl. A pierced ring adorned with a repeating pattern of quatrefoils, barbed “X”-shaped tracery, and demi-lune spandrels is positioned above hanging fleur de lys noix and below a crest of botany crosses. Extending outward from the bowl are six twisted arms, each supporting a crenelated bobeche and out-flaring capitals topped with white faux candle sleeves. Each arm also continues in the opposite direction (inwards) and is fitted with a cylindrical capital that houses six interior lights, before joining at a knop on the cylindrical center column.

The column runs upwards, terminating in a hexagonal crown that rises above a set of six highly curled leaves that make up the body dish. Each stalk has two much smaller leaf embellishments below, with both tiers visible above the repeating cross crest. Additional Gothic motifs can be seen on the reverse dish at the bottom of the chandelier, consisting of six highly scrolled spandrels with central spade-like barbs. The scrolls merge at the base of the center column, just above a pinecone bottom ball. Our wrought iron Gothic-style chandelier would be a fantastic illumination source for a foyer, library, or living room.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with minor bends to the bobeches and ring of the bottom bowl. Some recent restoration/repair work, coupled with professional rewiring for use in American homes, including the addition of a canopy. Commensurate losses to the finish, resulting in light oxidation.
