Description

This beautiful, polished brass jardiniere from France has been hand-worked in a technique known as repoussé, where decorative motifs are hammered from the inside, forming low-relief imagery. Dating to circa 1900, the main body has a vibrant golden hue, while the removable metal liner is gray. The jardiniere is adorned with a repeating fleur de lys motif that encircles the opening. Foliate motifs continue on the oval body, with a thick band of leafy cartouches set between a border of leaf curls over egg and dart (above the cartouches) and bundled fasces (below the cartouches). Even the three original feet are foliate-themed, while the fourth foot has been restored with a monopodial paw foot. Our brass repoussé jardiniere can be used as a planter in any room of the house; it could also function as a fabulous decorative accessory for a center table or console.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Slight buildup to the exterior. One foot has been replaced and the motif does not match the original three (this also causes a slight imbalance). Light buildup with some slight losses and fleabites to the removable liner, all commensurate with age and use.
