Artists in ancient Greece and Rome depicted dolphins as distorted, more fish-like creatures, and this representation was carried over by future artisans well into the 20th century. That form can be seen with this gilt bronze dolphin waterspout from France, dating to the 1900s. The dolphin has detailing that supports the antiquated depiction, such as the scale-covered snaking body that is topped by a tripartite fin. An opening has been made to the dolphin’s mouth, allowing water to exit freely. Based on the position of the attaching bolt and collar that are positioned beneath the dolphin, our gilt bronze waterspout is designed to be upright and affixed to a basin, making it a wonderful option for a sink spout.
CONDITION: Very good condition. Fleabites and light rubs. Designed as a basin spout, possibly for a sink.
