Circa 1790 Painted and Outcurved Oval Bas Relief Panel from Austria

$3,300.00

Description

A fascinating Neoclassical piece of art from Austria (circa 1790), this oval panel has been hand-carved with a bombe (out curving) form that accentuates the bas-relief figures. The illustration shows a very young Zeus, offering a fistful of lightning bolts to the outstretched arm of a woman reclining. It is quite possible that the semi-nude figure is Gaea, a personification of Earth, who raised her grandson, Zeus, in the years before the Titanomachy (war between the Titans and the Olympians). Behind the two figures is a drapery swag that is set within a foliate border depicted on the ogee molding of the oval frame. The entire plaque has a cream finish, but areas with paint losses present a natural wood color. Our outcurved bas relief panel would make a wonderful addition to any wall.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Minor nicks and fleabites to the panel, with commensurate losses to the cream paint finish. Light craquelure and age separations. Rigged for hanging purposes.
