Description

A wonderfully detailed wrought iron lamp from Catalonia, Spain (circa 1900), this three-light floor lamp features foliate motifs and three sets of mythical creatures with flaming pots. Standing almost seven feet tall (83 ½ inches), the lamp also has twisted rope, C-scrolls, and volute motifs, with just about every inch of iron having been worked by a talented Spanish smith. The cylindrical main body (which encircles the shade if used) depicts three identical scenes, each surrounded by twisted rope. All three sections have a pair of dragons with rinceau tongues flanking a pot feu. Long foliate tails and addorsed wings fill the space, presenting imagery full of movement. Additional turned pieces of iron, formed as elongated volutes, top the cylinder, rising up to form a cluster of C-scrolls finial. A tripartite base with volute curled leaf feet supports a thick, twisted shaft with foliate cups in the center. The shaft is topped by three S-scrolled arms with pierced foliate bobeches that are tall cylinders. Each bobeche has a cream faux candle sleeve cupped by a frosted globe in the form of a flame. A shade frame, which currently does not have the shade, can also be used in lieu of the globes. Our Catalonian floor lamp would make a wonderful addition to a library, office, den, or living room.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Commensurate oxidation and fleabites. Rewired professionally for use in American homes. The frosted globes seen in some photos are included, as is the shade frame seen in the final photograph.
