Description

This circular French brass jardiniere from the 1800s was crafted using both repousse and chasing techniques. Repousse elements are hammered from the verso side, while the chased motifs are worked from the front of the brass, enhancing the visual appearance while also giving the jardiniere some texture and depth. Its slightly rolled rim boasts subtle spiral fluting, mirroring the two rings of chased, twisted rope on the neck. Between the slender ropes is a series of recessed lobes encompassed within a rectangular border of geometric key pattern. Thick and slightly spiraled gadroon lobes, embellished with beading, were hammered in repousse on the main body. A pair of lion mascaron mounts with twisted rope handles running through the mouths adorn opposite sides of the main body, pairing with the three monopodial paw feet that support the small jardiniere. The perfect decorative accessory, our brass lion jardiniere can be displayed as an objet d’art or used as a lovely indoor planter.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with minor indentations and exterior buildup. Light losses and age separations. Commensurate buildup to the interior. Most likely once had a tin liner insert, which is no longer present.
