Description

A wonderful and unique piece of furnishing from Italy, this oval drop-leaf table was hand-carved in the 1600s. The oak wood has since been whitewashed, giving the wood a white-gray hue with accents of cream, all while allowing some of the darker, original color of the wood below to subtly show through. The coloration combined with the aged character of the 350+ year old wood has resulted an intriguing aesthetic. Measuring 1 ½” thick, the robust oval top features two side leaves supported by highly shaped supports that swivel from atop a transom that slots into a mortise in the middle of the stretcher. The stretcher is pegged through sinuous lyre legs with scrolled feet, giving the table an abundance of curves and movement. Our 17th-century whitewashed Italian drop-leaf table offers versatility, as it could be used as a breakfast room table with both leaves extended, or as a console table with the leaves dropped.

CONDITION: Strong antique condition with minor age separations and nicks. Very light presence of old woodworm. Traces of old fills and repairs, coupled with more recent restoration. The whitewashed finish is not original to the table.
