Most likely depicting the Greek goddess, Artemis, this French plaster bust dates to circa 1930s. With the deity looking down and to the viewer’s left, the crest of a stylized Phrygian helmet can be seen. The helmet is topped by a feline, with the tail extending down towards the shoulders of the bust.
According to the mythology, the monster Typhon attacked Mount Olympus, the home of the Greek gods. The gods transformed into animals to escape, with Artemis becoming a cat and fleeing to Egypt (where her analogous name was Bastet, the lion goddess).
Our Neoclassical bust has the stark white color associated with plaster, but small areas have developed a patina consisting of cream, gray, and brown. The statue would make a wonderful addition to a grand foyer, living room, landing, or library.
CONDITION: Good condition. Minor nicks and losses. Light rubs and areas of discoloration.
