Description

Originally overdoors in a French paneled room, this set of four demi-lune architecturals depict the four seasons in plaster. The true white hue of the panels is the ideal color, allowing the elements in high relief to gain prominence, as their shadows darken the areas in bas-relief. Each overdoor illustrates a woman accompanied by at least one putto, performing an activity that represents a particular season (as seen in the main photo, starting with the top left and progressing clockwise):

Fall
A woman, draped loosely in a garment, recumbent on the ground, reaches for a grape cluster hanging over her head. Her bottom leg protrudes well past the depth of the overdoor, adding a sense of movement. A putto can be seen beneath the woman, clutching tightly to his grape harvest.
Winter
As a woman squats in front of a roaring fire, trying to warm her hands, a putto can be seen to the side, holding additional tinder. The woman is clad in a long garment, tied at the waist, with rolled sleeves and a head wrap. Her head, which is in high relief, is tilted to the side and rests on her front shoulder.
Spring
A putto presents a floral garland to a woman in a loose gown lying on the ground. The woman gazes intently at the offering, hardly noticing the two putti frolicking in the background.
Summer
Two putti congregate in front of a woman carrying a bundle of wheat. A third putto clings to her garment, causing the woman to turn her head, which is presented in high relief.

Our unique set of four plaster architecturals have been reinforced with metal bars on the verso (as seen in some photos), allowing them to be hung above doorways. The entire set was most likely hung in a boiserie room, where the walls would have been decorated with similar allegorical motifs.

CONDITION: Good condition. Traces of old restoration and touch-ups. Minor nicks, losses, and age separations. Commensurate buildup.  Each panel has been signed in pencil by the artist.
