Antique French Marble Mortar with Pestle, 19th Century

SKU: 1222-22B Category:

$980.00

Description

During antiquity, mortars and pestles were used to grind up herbs for cooking or by pharmacists to make medicinal powders. They are typically constructed from a hardened substance, such as this 19th century French marble mortar. The light gray stone has a unique pattern with lighter, raised inclusions that give the mortar an interesting texture. It is paired with a 9 3/8 inch tall wooden pestle with a head diameter of 3 ¼ inches and a leather strap affixed to the handle. Mortars and pestles are often used today as decorative bowls or accessories, making them popular additions for smaller areas, such as entry halls, kitchens, and bathrooms.

CONDITION: Good, strong antique condition with fleabites and light losses. Minor fissuring and buildup, both commensurate with age and use. The pestle has minor age separations and losses, also from repetitive use. The mortar had a hole carved in the side to aid with transferring contents, but it was filled quite some time ago (see photos for details).
