The highly decorative nature of Baroque-style furniture is prevalent on this set of carved armchairs with raw silk upholstery. Although not a true pair (the carved elements are noticeably different), the chairs have been carved in a similar manner and can be presented as his and hers chairs.
Both chairs have tall, rectangular backs, upholstered with silk noil, which also covers the seat cushions. Sometimes referred to as “nubby”, the raw silk has a thick, linen-like appearance and the cream with gold accents provides a nice juxtaposition to the rich patina of the walnut arms and legs. Gracefully sloping arms terminate in volute hand rests; however, each chair has distinct carvings on the arm stumps below. The “his” chair, which is about three inches taller (both in total height and seat height) has been carved with large basket-like pierced stumps, while the “hers” (which is wider and deeper) has a smaller volute adorned with a foliate margent on the front façade. Similar carvings can be seen on the front legs of both chairs, however, with an inverse orientation (the larger carvings are above smaller elements on the legs). Another noticeable difference is the back legs and the stretchers: the more masculine chair features turned legs and an H-stretcher paired with a front connector consisting of a series of scrolls adorned with large whorls and piercings between the curves. The other chair has more elegant carvings, with sloping back feet and a front connector adorned with scrolls, counter curves, and a pierced cartouche of a heart-shaped swag with a flower.
Our set of his and hers armchairs with raw silk upholstery are comfortable and stately examples of Baroque-style furniture. They will be functional and beautiful additions to any library, study, or living room.
CONDITION: Very strong condition with light nicks, rubs, and age separations to the wood. Fleabites and slight losses, with minor wear to the upholstery.
