Description

Sometimes referred to as a vintner’s table, this wine-tasting table would have been used in a French vineyard during the 1800s. The tilt-top construction allows the table to be stored discretely when not in use, but when opened up, the top features a stylized vineyard label that has been hand-painted more recently. This table would have been used to serve wine during tastings or to celebrate the end of grape harvests.

The table stands on trestle supports with two thin, curved feet. A rich brown finish completes the top, which has a heraldic display in the center. Two gray rampant lions act as supporters to a shaped shield with a black chevron and three fleur de lys over a blue background. They are standing on a gold curled ribbon with the Latin phrase Nec Pluribus Impar (very loosely: “not unequal to many“) written in black. Written above and below the coat of arms display are the phrases “Saint Emilion Grand Cru”, “Chateau Laroque” and “Cru Classé”, which is most likely from a 19647 bottle of Chateau Laroze that inspired the artist. Our Grand Vin de Bordeaux Margaux wine-tasting table will add a splash of color and intrigue if used as a breakfast table, occasional table, or as a decorative accent to a wine room.

CONDITION: Good condition. The tilt-top table is originally from the 1800s, with the painted elements added more recently and having minor rubs. Light losses and commensurate age separations. Traces of old wood worm damage that necessitated fills.
