This pair of hand carved wooden greyhounds, measuring over 33 inches tall,  was made in Italy.  They are depicted sitting on their haunches, with their characteristic long, slender tail tucked around a hind leg.  Their ears are pinned back and eyes are wide open, as if gazing into the distance for something to hunt. A thick collar with a circular clasp can be seen encompassing their long, arched necks.

Italian greyhounds are an affectionate and playful variety of a sighthound, which is to say they hunt by sight rather than by scent. Their constant state of heightened alert has been magnificently depicted in this pair of wooden sculptures. Each dog seen here has been finished with patinated gesso and intentional losses, giving them a gray hue over exposed areas of wood (the female has a darker wood finish than the male). The dogs sit upon a three-inch rectilinear plinth adorned with a spiral fluting motif, providing stability to the 33 ¼ inch tall sculptures. CONDITION: Very good condition with intentional distress marks, presenting as nicks, rubs, and losses to the gesso finish. Inconsistencies to the thickness of the gesso.
