This pair of French wooden mirrors were hand-carved in the style of Louis XVI by an expert-level woodworker in the early 1900s. Perhaps the most eye-catching motif is the crest of each frame, which is comprised of a pair of overladen cornucopias bound by a crinkled ribbon. The fruit that spills from the cornucopias has been carved in relief and the ribbon extends well beyond the top of the oval frame, giving the mirrors added depth. In contrast, shallow carvings of foliate rinceaux, more akin to etchings, adorn the wood that surrounds the beveled glass. A ring of beading embellishes the edges of the frames, interrupted at the top by the cornucopias and at the bottom by a cabochon cartouche. The wood has been lightly whitewashed, which pairs wonderfully with the warm colored wood. Our pair of Louis XVI-style oval mirrors would make wonderful additions to just about any room of the house.
CONDITION: Good antique condition. Light age separations to frames and build-up to glass. Minor rubs to frames with discoloration in small areas. Rigged for hanging.
