Known as ciel du lit in French, this pair of gilt and polychromed wing cherubs are canopies hung above beds. Drapery that surrounds the bed would be placed inside the opening of the ciels, allowing the fabric to be pulled back like a curtain, revealing the bed. Each ciel is fronted by a cherub with foliate feathers and drapery wrapped around its neck. Other motifs include Vitruvian waves, which were Neoclassical in nature, but seen during the Renaissance, floral swags tied with crinkled ribbon bows, and bound husks of laurel leaves.
CONDITION: Good condition. Minor nicks and rubs with light paint losses. A swag element is missing on one of the ciels.
