Pair of Circa 1850 Napoleon III Cast Iron Vases from Le Jura, France

$6,400.00

Description

This pair of period Napoleon III cast iron vases are from the department of Jura, in eastern France. Dating to circa 1850, the vases have a dark brown hue, with areas of patina that present as gray, orange, and green. These unique vases have two highly curled handles that are the horns of a pair of grotesque foliate faces that adorn the iron on opposing sides. The mascarons rise above the rolled rims with foliate detailing, giving the vases added height and width. Directly below is a ring of gadroon that is interrupted by two open-mouth dolphins that align with the handles. A wide circular foot with slightly recessed molding rests on a square plinth, giving each vase added stability.

Interestingly, there are no industrial cities in Le Jura; the vases were not produced by a large studio but by an artisanal metalworker. The unique forms of the vases are testaments to the craftsmanship of this small business. Our cast iron Napoleon III vases can be used inside or outdoors. Both vases have drainage holes, allowing them to be used functionally as planters or as decorative elements.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Buildup, fleabites, and oxidation, commensurate with having been used as planters outdoors. One vase has a light age separation, but it is sturdy. Some small areas have green discoloration, possibly from a painted finish at one point. Drainage holes in both.
