Pair of Antique French Painted Oak Louis XVI Style Greek Key Consoles, C. 1880

Description

Hand-carved in oak, circa 1880 in France, these painted demi-lune consoles are in the style of Louis XVI. Furniture from the reign of Louis XVI featured motifs of a Neoclassical nature, as indicated by the Greek key and crenelated carvings on the apron of these consoles. The repeating geometric pattern is interrupted by a rectangular joinery in the center that is embellished with a large floret. There are two more floral joineries on the end, with all three aligning over tall, fluted, and tapering legs with foliate cups at the top and arrow feet beneath a projecting ring near the bottom. Above each joinery is a rectangular protrusion to the overhanging top. Both tables have been refinished with a well-done parcel paint finish with gray, white, and light blue hues. These Louis XVI-style tables can be used as consoles in an area such as a hallway or living room, or they can be pushed together to form a center table for an entryway.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. The parcel painted finish was added more recently. Minor nicks and rubs to the wood.
