Pair of 19th Century French Winged Lion Supports in Carved Oak

Description

Hand-carved in oak during the 1800s, this pair of French supports depict a monopodial winged lion, known as a griffin. The mythical creatures are set with an L-shaped bracket and their banded, large paw rests on a geometrically shaped plinth with a deep cavetto undercut. A foliate curl adorned with beading graces the chest of the griffins, with additional leafy volutes forming an attractive tail. The wood has been stripped more recently, allowing the fascinating wood grains to gain prominence. It is quite possible that the lions were corbels of a large case piece, as in antiquity, griffins were considered protectors of valuables. Our winged lion supports are well-carved sculptural items that stand upright, although they could also be installed on a wall and used as shelf supports.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition. The supports were most likely corbels to a large piece of furniture. The original finish has been stripped, but slight traces remain. Minor age separations with light losses and rubs.
