Large Antique French Bronze Wine Barrel Spout with Animal Motif, 19th Century

SOLD

Description

This large bronze wine barrel spout with animal motif is from France and dates to the 1800s. Most likely used in a traditional foudre barrel, the spout played an integral role in the winemaking process, managing the flow of wine with precision and care. The threading at the terminal of the shaft is bordered by a protruding collar, with another protuberance closer to the corner joint, which is topped by a shaped handle. A detailed mythical creature (either a dragon or a stylized version of a dolphin) forms the spout opening, adding artistic flair to a functional item. Today, the spout can function as a unique fountain water element or sink fixture.
