Hand-carved in Italy, circa 1750, this large carved giltwood eagle head has been mounted to a painted black stand with a thin metal arm more recently. The bird has a large foliate margent hanging from its beak and a ballflower on top of the head. Interestingly, most of the elements have been gilded, except the nape, which has been carved with undulating fluting and finished in white, although buildup over the centuries has given it a pale gray patina. A beautiful and unique decorative accessory, our carved eagle head can be displayed on a fireplace mantel, sofa table, or bookshelf.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition, with fleabites and minor rubs. Acceptable losses to gilding. The painted stands with metal arms were added more recently. Light buildup to the painted area, which has given the white palette a light gray patina.
