Italian Limestone Sculpture of The Winged Lion of Venice

SOLD

Description

The immaculate details of this hand-carved Italian limestone enhance the depth of the sculpture that depicts the winged lion of Venice. At over 11 inches thick, the sculpture can stand upright, supported by a large plinth with thin recessed molding. The muscular lion has a long, flowing mane and is facing to the viewer’s right, with wings addorsed, displaying great detail in the segments of the feathers. His front left paw rests on top of an open book, with Latin text that reads Pax tibi Marce evangelista meus (“Peace to you Mark, my evangelist”). The visible background has been textured and is surrounded by a thin molding. There are areas of green and light gray patination to the dark gray stone, augmenting the quality of the carvings.

According to the ancient lore, Mark the Evangelist was traveling through Europe when he reached a lagoon in Venice. As he stopped for a rest, an angel appeared and uttered the Latin phrase seen on the lion’s book. Further augmenting the story, the prophet, Ezekiel, had a vision of four winged animals that represented the evangelists; Mark appeared as a lion. Over time, Mark became the patron saint of Venice and the winged lion was incorporated into architecture and artwork throughout the city.  Our beautiful limestone statue of the winged lion of Venice can be displayed as an interior sculpture on a pedestal or imbedded in an exterior wall as an architectural.

CONDITION: Very good condition with minor nicks and rubs. Limestone is a natural material that can change color with exposure to the elements. Please contact us for photos of the current patina.
