Hand-carved from a single piece of limestone, this whimsical seahorse sculpture rests on a three-piece pedestal, giving it additional presence. Sometimes called a hippocampus, this mythical creature has been depicted in such ancient civilizations as Greece, Etruscan, and Phoenician mythology. In all iterations, the cryptid is depicted with the upper body of a horse and the tail of a fish. Our seahorse is lying on a stylized sea foam, with its webbed hooves pressing against the crest of the water. Its tail is curled up on the back of the horse, tucked neatly behind the wavy mane. The pedestal has deep cavetto cornices along the top and bottom edges, while the center section has shallow carvings of rectangles with canted corners. All pieces of stone have a light gray hue with darker patination in some areas. Perfect for poolside or garden statuary, our Italian limestone seahorse on a pedestal will surely attract the attention of anyone who views it.
*For shipping and transportation purposes, the pedestal is comprised of three pieces of stone, while the statue itself is a singular block. We have placed foam cushions between the sections of stone for purposes of display. The foam is not needed for installation.*
CONDITION: Very good condition with minor nicks and rubs. Limestone is a natural material that can change color with exposure to the elements. Please contact us for a photo of the current patina.
