Heavily Worked 19th C. French Brass Jardiniere with Paw Feet and Cherub Handles

$2,500.00

Description

Virtually no section of this French brass jardiniere is unadorned, with vivid images inspired by items found in nature (such as paw feet) and mythology (genii and cherubs). The heavily worked planter was crafted by a master artisan during the 1800s, with each section independently detailed, as seen by joineries at the bottom of the interior.

Supported by four large monopodial paw feet topped with fleur de lys and volutes, the bulbous main body features identical scenes that expanse across both of the longer sides of the ovate jardiniere. On the thickest section of the jardiniere, a wonderful foliate rinceaux can be seen emerging from the tails of two genii clutching a tall vase. The background is textured, as is the neck, which is embellished with grotesque mascarons, each accompanied by two overflowing cornucopias and foliate margents with birds. This panoramic scene is set in between two rings of foliate niches, with the uppermost one beneath a slightly rolled rim of egg-and-dart with beading. On each of the short side is an impressive, winged cherub mount with a protruding roundel and foliate handle. Our brass jardiniere with paw feet and cherub handles would make a wonderful indoor planter for any room of the house.

CONDITION: Very good condition. Commensurate buildup and oxidation to the interior. Light rubs and verdigris to exterior.
