Description

Louis XV commodes, such as this gorgeous, bleached example from the 1920s, are known for their smooth lines and exquisite marquetry patterns. Notice the exaggerated curves of the sides and front that enhance the elegant form of our French chest of drawers. A golden marble top with brown and cream veining ties in well with the beige colored wood, which has hues of gold and light brown that accentuate the stunning wood grain and geometric marquetry. The one-inch thick marble also has supple curves, with rounded front corners and an ogee molding along all sides.

There are three tiers of drawers, with the top level having two smaller drawers, while the lower two drawers are full-length. Each drawer has a pair of large, bronze foliate handles, flanking an asymmetrical leaf keyplate (the top drawers have just one handle each, with a similar leaf faux escutcheon in the center). Additional bronze embellishment can be seen on the two front feet in the form of pierced roquillards that rise up as a leafy margent along the curvaceous pilasters. Another bronze mount in the shape of a sprawling leaf can be seen on the sinuous front apron. This stunning French Louis XV marquetry commode would make a welcomed addition to any bedroom, living room, or hallway.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Fleabites, minor losses, and light scratches to marble. Very light nicks and rubs to wood, which has been bleached more recently, leaving traces of the original finish. No key.
