Description

This handsome antique French bookcase or display cabinet features large doors with original chicken wire paneling, known as “grillage”, in French.  Most likely the upper section of a  large, 19th century French buffet a deux corps, this cabinet has been repurposed into a unique and attractive bookcase with a depth of only 15.25 inches. The door panels are roughly rectangular, with asymmetrically arched tops and angular barbed canting at the upper corners. A pair of large, iron hinges allow the doors to open (the left door is secured by two latches, while the right door has a magnetic closure), revealing three full-length shelves that are more recent additions.

The top has thinly chamfered edges, with rounded front corners that align with curved pilasters that are adorned with elongated rectangles enveloped by thin molding. Both sides are comprised of a rectangular panel with deep, recessed molding. A thick plinth gives the bibliotheque added stability for placement in a living room, library, or office. The painted light brown finish allows it to be paired with a variety of color schemes.

CONDITION: Good condition with minor age separations, nicks, and losses. Presence of old restoration work with more recent fills and repairs. Existing painted finish has varying hues, with traces of stains on one side. More recent shelving system incorporates components from earlier supports. No key, but magnetized right door.
