Circa 1750 Carved Walnut Wood Buffet Crédence from Nîmes, France

Description

A stunning buffet from the period of Louis XV, this crédence (French for “credenza”) was hand-carved in walnut wood circa 1750 in Nimes, France. The deep carvings and moldings feature subtle asymmetry, which was a hallmark of the period. Interestingly, the Nimoise woodworkers were able to also incorporate regional stylings, like the highly shaped aprons, which are arbalete on the sides and a pierced margent of attenuated leaves and curled branches on the front. The wood has a rich honey brown color that accentuates the exceptional carvings, such as the roquillard front cabriole legs with pad feet. Both doors have functional locks (with one key), that open on thick iron hinges to reveal a full-length shelf. A deep cavetto cornice gives additional depth to the slightly overhanging top, while the visible dowel construction adds to the character. Our elegant Louis XV walnut buffet would make a welcomed addition to a hallway, dining room, or living area.

CONDITION: Very strong antique condition, with wear consistent with age and use. Old restorations coupled with some more recent work, most noticeably to one of the shelf supports. Traces of old woodworm, resulting in minor losses. Two functional locks opened by one key.
