Carved Limestone Single Pillar Fountain from the South of France

$7,900.00

Description

Consisting of 14 pieces of Estaillade limestone, this single-pillar fountain was hand-carved in the South of France. A subtle bombe curve embellishes the front of the basin, just in front of a pair of iron bars that extend from the basin wall to the pillar situated above the back wall. These bars would have been used centuries ago to hold containers as villagers filled their vessels with water. Today, they can be used to support a planter box or a decorative bucket. Above the bars is a scrolled iron spout that emanates from a raised circular carving on the pillar. The entablature of the pillar features multiple layers of molding, adding to the rectilinear form of the fountain. In addition to the bombe curve, a pair of ogee corbels flank the pillar, softening the straight lines that dominate the fountain. The stones have a warm cream patina with areas of soft white. Our single-pillar fountain would make a wonderful addition to an interior courtyard or garden landscape.

CONDITION: Very good condition. Intentional distress marks. Oxidation to the iron spouts, and a lesser extent, the iron bars. Limestone is a natural material that can change colors with exposure to the elements. Please contact us for a photo of the current patina.
