Blue and White Painted Antique Italian Credenza, Circa 1850

Description

A beautiful and shapely buffet dating to circa 1850, this painted credenza was hand-carved in Italy. The hand-painted finish consists of bluish-gray scrolls and flowers atop a white background. Behind the two square doors with recessed panels is a full-length, shaped shelf. The doors have several thin layers of molding, surrounding the painted arabesque of scrolls, topped by a six-petaled flower. Both sides, which have been carved with a cyma curve, have similar, but larger arabesques, with multiple flowers and some added quatrefoils. The sinuosity of the sides is mirrored by the shaped top, that narrowly hangs over the main body. Most of the apron touches the floor, except the front façade, which has a high-profile apron flanked by shaped bracket feet. Our painted Italian credenza is quite a versatile piece, as the light hue allows it to be paired with various interior décor palettes in rooms such as an entryway, living room, or dining room.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Minor nicks and rubs, with light age separations. Traces of old restoration, including the painted finish. Functional lock with key. The backside, which will be unseen, has traces of paint from the refinishing.
