A large and striking example of a timeless classic, this Louis Philippe mirror is embellished with a large floral and foliate crest. Louis Philippe mirrors, such as this beautiful gold leaf one from 19th-century France, typically feature rectilinear sides, rounded upper corners, and a central quarter-round molding that projects beyond the accompanying ring of beading. In this case, the protruding molding is adorned with a repeating floral motif, pairing well with the massive crest. In the center of the rising cartouche is a scalloped shell, encircled by several foliate stalks dotted with flowers. Measuring 74 inches tall, our Louis Philippe mirror has been professionally restored in France, and it has a rich gold leaf surface, which is in very good condition. It would make a fantastic floor mirror for a bedroom, bathroom, or hallway.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Very light loss of silver to glass. Minor rubs and loss of gilding, revealing traces of red bole, which is a desirable trait. Not rigged for hanging. Two wood slats have been installed on the back to facilitate moving the mirror; these can be removed for final installation. Restored in France
