Antique Terra Cotta Oil or Grains Jar from Casalina, Italy, Dated 1887

SOLD

Description

Designed to store large quantities of olive oil or grains, this terra cotta jar originated in Casalina, Italy. Pots like these were used throughout the Mediterranean, as the temperate climate produced a variety of agricultural goods. The bulbous body has four protruding ridges, with the greatest depth being found at the center of the pot. In between each ridge is a raised element that gives the pot added character. A console beneath the rolled rim of the opening has a date stamp of 1887, while the oval production mark above the most prominent molding reads “Casalina” beneath two crossed keys. Near the bottom of the pot are two more circular embellishments, one of a winged angel riding a dolphin, while the smaller one beneath it is a floret. The pot has an interesting color scheme, with the upper half in ochre and the bottom having a striated white patination. Our Italian terra cotta oil jar can be used inside or outdoors as a decorative accessory.  It is not advisable to use the jar as a full planter, but it can support some grasses, dried plants, or silk flowers that do not require irrigation or soil.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with minor nicks and losses. Commensurate buildup to the interior. Some imperfections to the glaze on the rim of the opening, with slight drips on the main body.
