Description

Dating to circa 1720, this period Regence mirror has a wonderful parcel paint finish that highlights the delicately carved foliate frame. Topped by a large, parted leaf crest that is flanked by fluted volute scrolls, several curled leaf offshoots extend across the top of the shaped mirror. The lower corners of the glass extend outwards and are encircled by a rinceau with a central floret. A small, scalloped shell accompanied by a husked swag adorns the bottom of the frame, above three tenons that extend downwards, allowing the mirror to be placed on a mantel. These tenons indicate that the mirror was once the crown of a full-length mirror, as it would have slotted into the top of the larger mirror. This original mirror was gilded and remnants can still be seen under the parcel paint finish, presenting a beautiful white, cream, gold, and brown color palette. Our French Regence mirror has been rigged and could be hung on the wall of just about any room of the house.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. The parcel finish was added more recently. Commensurate losses. Slight loss of silver to the glass, which is a desired trait. Traces of old restoration, coupled with some more recent fills and touch-ups. This was originally the crown section of a larger mirror with additional panes of glass. Rigged for hanging.
