With its highly decorative motifs, this majestic Italian armchair with raw silk upholstery is in the Baroque style. The walnut frame, which was hand-carved in Italy, circa 1890, has a fantastic, rich patina in dark brown that is offset by a silk noil (or “nubby” silk) cream upholstery. Golden threads accent the thick textile, which has a linen-like appearance.
Gracefully sloping arms emerge from the tall, rectangular back, terminating in a volute scroll handrest above a basket-like pierced arm stump. The two front legs have been carved in a similar fashion, but in reverse: the pierced basket is above the volute. In between the two baskets is an elaborate display of a series of scrolls adorned with prominent volute whorls and piercings between the curves. A baluster form H-stretcher adds additional support, pairing nicely with the turned block back feet. Our walnut Baroque-style armchair is a comfortable and elegant option for seating in a living room, study, or library.
CONDITION: Very strong condition with light nicks and age separations. Fleabites and slight losses, with minor wear to the upholstery.
