Measuring over 7.5 feet long, this handsome Italian library table could function as a console or large desk. Originally hand-carved from walnut, the table has some elements that are more recent, yet still antique. The beautifully carved closed lyre legs, which are comprised of banded dolphins with volute tails, date to the 17th century. An ornately shaped stretcher slots into the lyre legs, offering additional support for the one-and-a-quarter-inch thick top that was added in the 19th century. Beneath the top is a single drawer with a small iron pull and rosette backplate. The drawer fits seamlessly into the three-paneled frieze, with each of the rectangular sections surrounded by thick molding, which is mirrored by the backside. Our Renaissance-style Italian table would make a wonderful addition to a library or study, but could also be placed on a landing or in a foyer.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Old restoration work, including the incorporation of some more recent (yet still antique) wood, such as the top/stretcher. Minor nicks, rubs, and losses. Wear to the drawer lining. Slight trace of old woodworm activity.
