Hand-carved in Sweden, circa 1870, this Gustavian-style stool has a pleasing color palette, with a cream color wooden frame (most likely added more recently) and white linen upholstery affixed by numerous small nailheads. Gustavian style is the Swedish interpretation of the French period known as Louis XVI, which featured Neoclassical themes. Shortly before being named King of Sweden, Gustav III spent some time in France. When he returned home to Sweden, Gustav brought a love of the Neoclassical stylings seen in Versailles, with the ultimate goal of making Stockholm the “Paris of the North”.
Our Gustavian stool has four fluted and tapering legs with arrow feet beneath a small turned ring. Square joineries embellished with rosettes are aligned above each leg, interrupting the bead and reel and fluted motifs that accentuate the apron. The plush cushion, which was added more recently, has a piped edge, providing a subtle visual accent. This lovely painted stool has the graceful lines associated with Gustavian-style furniture and would be a welcomed addition to a boudoir, living room, or den.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Minor rubs, age separations, and fleabites to the wood frame. Very light wear to the upholstery, which has been added more recently.
