Designed to be displayed over a fireplace mantel, this beautiful mirror is surrounded by a painted giltwood frame with motifs in the style of Louis XVI. Hand-carved in France, circa 1850, the glass is separated by chandelle pilasters that create three sections. Borders of beading surround each of the sections, while the entire glass is encircled by spiral fluting, interrupted in the corners by a floret square. The sides are adorned with climbing vines, dotted with flowers, that extend about halfway up the frame. At the top of the frame is an expansive crest, comprised of two musical trophies accompanied by laurel wreaths, that are positioned above the two outer sections of the mirror. Over the center section is a large flowering bouquet set inside an oval that is surrounded by a floral wreath and a crinkled ribbon bow. All elements are all gilded, while the backgrounds have been painted with a light green lacquer. The result is a beautiful overmantel mirror that would enhance any room with a fireplace. French examples of this type of mirror are quite unusual, especially in the Louis XVI style.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Minor nicks and losses, with very light age separations. Light buildup to the frame, with slight presence of red bole, which is a desirable trait. The glass has been added more recently. Remnants of old rigging holes in the top, which are unseen with a proper installation.
